The mission of the WERF National Center for Resource Recovery and Nutrient Management is to provide data, demonstration, and tools to shift water quality community to find solutions for resource recovery and reuse including nutrients, energy, and water. The Center expands and integrates WERF’s current research in nutrient removal and recovery that is currently focused on phosphorus; and nitrogen in centralized municipal wastewater systems.

The key objectives of the Center are to:

  • Develop science on source control, treatment optimization, and nutrient recovery across all major sources of nutrient pollution and transfer that science in order to support sustainable nutrient management in the water environment.
  • Demonstrate technology performance results and data to support implementation.
  • Evaluate social, economic and environmental costs, benefits, and acceptance.
